June 8, 2024 - River Safety and Rescue - Level 3 - Jim Thorpe, PA

$195.00

Rivers are dangerous, and swiftwater safety skills and rescue techniques are not intuitive. You carry a throw rope, but do you know how to use it? Do you know about the dangers of foot entrapments, or when it’s safe to stand up in a river? Do you know what to do if you encounter a strainer in a river? What about a low-head dam? Ever heard of the “clean lines” principle?

Level 3 River Safety and Rescue is an intensive full-day course covering a robust curriculum developed by the American Canoe Association (ACA). This course is critical training for anyone recreating in moving water, and it will give you the tools and know-how to make good decisions so you can come home safely at the end of the day.

No prior paddling experience is necessary. This course is perfect for anyone interested in increasing their river IQ, and learning the safety and rescue techniques and decision-making skills required when venturing into a river environment.

Participants should expect to be in the water for significant portions of this course. A DRYSUIT OR FULL WETSUIT IS MANDATORY FOR THIS COURSE (rentals are available). You must also be able to swim while wearing a PFD. Read about the rest of the course and gear requirements here.

This is not a downriver paddling course, but a boat is required. Any paddlecraft will do, but a packraft is recommended as we will spend time on packraft-specific boat-based rescues. If you need rental gear, check out our offerings here.
